Chinese paper
cut-outs
Mimicri
Art Galleries present oriental arts in various forms. Here you find
the art of paper cutting dear to Chinese people since the year 206 BC when
paper was invented. The craft is found in many other countries but China has
the broadest tradition of variety in subjects, techniques, and
regional characteristics. The cut-outs have been used as wall and window
decoration. Scissors and knife are used by all walks of life to make the
delicate cut-outs. Straight cut out forms are sometimes enhanced by painting
and colouring. Back up layers of thin paper may be used to create
special effects. Subjects are frequently drawn from legend and folk
lore. Flora and fauna are handled with great charm.
